Tropical Queenslands Climate at Julatten
Birding around the Julatten - Mt. Molloy region of Tropical Queensland
is a much more pleasant experience than along the lowland areas
of the North Queensland coast. We are situated at an altitude of
440m bringing cooler temperatures and generally lower humidity.
The "Wet Tropics" of North Queensland experiences a monsoonal
climate from December through to April (Wet Season). Overnight temperatures
are in the range of 21-24ºC and during the day up to 32ºC, but with
cloud cover often a lot cooler. In this time the monsoonal trough
can give huge amounts of rainfall and the occasional cyclone, however,
the weather can also be dry and sunny. This time of year is often
refered to as the "Green Season" due to the rain renewing
the tropical vegetation. Many species of birds take the opportunity
to breed during this period with some migrating down from places
such as Papua New Guinea and Indonesia to our north. Be prepared
to get wet, but also to enjoy the experience.
From May the temperatures are cooler and although is still may
rain, it is more likely to be showers than deluges. In the winter
months of June -August, the overnight temperatures are in the range
of 10-16ºc (but can get as low as 6ºc on occasions) and during the
day a pleasant 22-26º. October and November are called the buildup
months when the humidity and temperature build up once more to produce
storms as a prelude to the monsoon (Wet Season). Remember - climate
is what you expect and weather is what you get!
Being in Tropical Queensland, we only experience about one hour
variation of daylight during the year. In winter months it gets
light around 6.30am and dark around 6pm. In the summer months 5.30am
- 7pm.
